Windows XP Embedded Reinstall CD

MobileRobots supplies a basic reinstallation compact disc along with orders of robots with onboard computers running Windows Embedded. Contact Support if you need us to send you a copy of this disk or access to download the disk image. The disc must be burned to a CDROM (not DVD), as an "El Torito" bootable ISO-9660 CD.

This disc can be used to install Windows Embedded on the hard disk if it become damaged, or you replace the disk with a new one. The reinstallation process (re)formats the computer's hard disk and deletes all files and installed programs. Therefore you will need to then reinstall software, and may need to manually install some drivers. (See the Drivers and Software pages for downloads or information.) The disc boots into a very basic Windows operating system (Windows PE) whose command shell may also be accessed (e.g. to use diskpart and other tools manually).

Note: due to license restrictions, the Windows Embedded system we provide is customized to our robots and onboard computers, and may only be used on a MobileRobots robot with onboard computer.

Note: Prior to supplying a custom Windows Embedded system for our robots, MobileRobots provided a standard Windows XP Pro operating system with its own install/recovery media. These instructions apply only to Windows Embedded reinstallation.

To attach a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive to the robot's onboard computer you will need to open the appropriate robot panel to expose the onboard computer: see the robot operations manual. Take precaution against static electric discharge by grounding self to earth while working with the onboard computer.

Instructions for booting the CD on each type of onboard computer are given below. After the CD boots, follow the prompts to confirm reinstallation of Windows Embedded on the primary hard disk.

After the base Windows Embedded system is installed, you can re-install MobileRobots software packages by downloading them from All Software. Drivers for some accessory devices can be found from the Drivers page.

Contact support if you have any problems, questions or need access to drivers or software not available from this site or from the device manufacturer's site.

Reinstalling Windows Embedded on Versalogic Cobra EBX-12 Onboard Computer

Unfortunately, the Windows Embedded reinstallation CD cannot boot on the EBX-12 computer (the version of Windows used to boot from the CD cannot boot the EBX-12 hardware). Therefore, you must use another computer to restore the system on the robot's hard disk.

Remove the hard disk from the robot. Remove all hard disks from the second computer. Add the robot hard disk to the second computer as the primary hard disk. Add the CD-ROM as a second disk drive. IMPORTANT: the hard disk must be the primary disk (attached to primary IDE or SATA connector). Boot the computer. Immediately insert the reinstallation CD into the drive and close the drive door. You may need to change the computer's BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM device before attempting to boot from the hard disk.

The Windows PE minimal system will load from the CD and a script will run. Press enter to write the recovery image to the hard disk. This process will take several minutes. All data on all partitions of the hard disk will be erased.

When the process successfully finishes, eject the CD and shut down the computer. Remove the hard disk from the computer and replace it in the robot. Attach power and the IDE or SATA cable for the robot onboard computer.
