How to Start X and Gnome On Robot
From MobileRobots Research and Academic Customer Support
When you log into the console of a robot's onboard computer in the default text-only mode, only a shell is started. To start the X Window System and Gnome, which is the Debian Linux graphical windowing system (GUI), run the command "startx". This will start X and Gnome. You can then use the menus or desktop icons to start some of the demo programs, shells, MobileEyes, Mapper3 or Mapper3Basic, MobileSim, etc.
On newer installations with Debian 5, you can also boot into a graphical mode that starts X automatically with a graphical login (the GDM display manager). To change this to the default mode, re-order the entries or change the default entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
