The Research PatrolBot is a PatrolBot configured for educational, academic, or other research development use rather than end-user commercial or industrial application use. PatrolBot has a longer run time, higher payload, and more integrated sensing (laser and bumpers) than Pioneer 3, as well as automated recharging station as a standard accessory.

The first generation PatrolBot with gray body includes external ports and controls in a side panel. It has a Pioneer subtype of "patrolbot-sh", and its ARIA Parameter File is patrolbot-sh.p.

The second generation MT400-600-R PatrolBot has a white body, suspension, and all ports and controls are in recessed panels in the top plate. It has a subtype of "researchPB" and its ARIA Parameter File is researchPB.p.
